What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels made from hyaluronic acid (HA) — a substance naturally produced by the body that holds moisture and maintains skin volume and elasticity. As we age, natural HA levels decline, contributing to volume loss, sagging, and deepening lines.

Injectable hyaluronic acid fillers restore what has been lost. By placing filler precisely within different layers of the face, a skilled doctor can:

  • Restore volume to areas that have become hollow or flat
  • Define and sculpt the jawline, chin, or cheeks
  • Soften deeper folds and lines
  • Rebalance facial proportions
  • Create structure where it has been diminished by ageing

Hyaluronic acid fillers are reversible — they can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed. This makes them one of the most flexible and safe categories of aesthetic treatment available.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

When injected, hyaluronic acid integrates with surrounding tissue, attracting and retaining water molecules. This creates volume, improves tissue hydration, and provides structural support depending on the depth of placement and the type of filler used.

Different filler products have different consistencies — some are soft and ideal for superficial refinement, others are firmer and used to create structure and lift in deeper tissue planes. At Hinoki, the product selection and placement technique are determined by your doctor based on your anatomy and goals.

Treatment Areas

Cheeks

Volume loss in the mid-face leads to a flattening of the cheeks and, over time, a drooping of the overlying tissue. Cheek filler restores this volume, lifts the lower face, and recreates the natural convexity of youthful cheeks. This is one of the highest-impact filler placements.

Jawline

Filler along the jawline adds definition and structure, sharpening the angle of the jaw and creating a more contoured, defined profile. Effective in both men and women.

Chin

Chin filler adds projection and definition to the chin, improving facial balance — particularly the profile view. Often combined with jawline treatment for a comprehensive lower-face result.

Nasolabial Folds (Smile Lines)

The lines that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth deepen with age and volume loss. Filler in this area softens the fold while addressing the underlying cause — volume deficit in the mid-face.

Tear Troughs (Under-eyes)

The depression that forms under the eyes with age creates a permanently tired appearance. Tear trough filler is a specialist technique requiring precise placement and the right product choice. It is one of the most technically demanding filler applications and should only be performed by an experienced doctor.

Temples

Volume loss in the temples is often overlooked but creates a hollowing effect that ages the face. Temple filler restores the natural fullness of the upper face.

How Much Filler Do I Need?

This is one of the most common questions — and it depends entirely on the area being treated, the degree of volume loss, and your aesthetic goals.

As a general guide:

  • 0.5–1ml — subtle lip enhancement, fine line softening, minor volume restoration in a localised area
  • 1–2ml — meaningful cheek volume restoration, jawline definition, chin projection
  • 2–3ml — comprehensive multi-area treatment, significant volume restoration in patients with more advanced volume loss

Your doctor will discuss this with you before treatment. At Hinoki, we take a conservative approach — it is always possible to add more, but overcorrection should be avoided.

What to Expect

Before Your Treatment

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen), fish oil, and alcohol for 24–48 hours before
  • Arrive with clean skin and no makeup
  • Inform your doctor of any previous filler treatments, especially recent or unknown products
  • Do not book within 2 weeks of a major event

During Your Treatment

Your doctor will assess your facial anatomy, discuss the treatment plan, and obtain informed consent. Topical anaesthetic cream may be applied to sensitive areas. Most HA fillers also contain lidocaine, which numbs the area during injection. The procedure takes 45–60 minutes depending on areas treated.

After Your Treatment

  • Avoid touching, pressing, or applying makeup to treated areas for 6–8 hours
  • Avoid vigorous exercise for 24–48 hours
  • Avoid extremes of heat (sauna, steam, sun) for 2 weeks
  • Avoid flying for 24–48 hours
  • Sleep with head elevated for the first night if possible
  • Some swelling and bruising is normal — expect this to peak at 24–48 hours and resolve within 1–2 weeks

When Will I See Results?

Results are immediate — you will see a visible change on the day of treatment. However, there will be swelling in the first 1–2 weeks. The settled, final result is assessed at 4–6 weeks.

How Long Do Results Last?

Duration depends on the area, the product used, and your individual metabolism. As a guide:

  • Lips: 6–9 months
  • Cheeks and mid-face: 12–18 months
  • Jawline and chin: 12–18 months
  • Tear troughs: 12–24 months (longer due to low movement in the area)

Who Is It For?

Dermal fillers are suitable for most healthy adults who:

  • Have areas of facial volume loss they wish to restore
  • Want to add structure, definition, or balance to facial features
  • Are looking for natural enhancement rather than dramatic alteration

Fillers are not suitable if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have active skin infection in the treatment area
  • Have had a known reaction to hyaluronic acid products
  • Have certain autoimmune or connective tissue conditions — discuss with your doctor

Frequently Asked Questions

When performed by a qualified medical doctor using appropriate products, dermal fillers have an excellent safety record. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body. Serious complications are rare and are significantly less likely when treatment is administered by an experienced doctor rather than a non-medical practitioner.

Anti-wrinkle injections relax muscles to reduce dynamic wrinkles (expression lines). Fillers add volume and structure to address volume loss, static lines, and facial contouring. They treat different concerns and are frequently combined.

Not when volume is placed conservatively and in the right anatomical locations. The "overfilled" look results from excessive volume, incorrect placement, or accumulation of product over time without reassessment. At Hinoki, we take a less-is-more approach — results should look like a more refreshed version of you.

At Hinoki Aesthetics, dermal fillers are priced at €295 for 1ml, €590 for 2ml, and €590 for 3ml.

Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved using hyaluronidase — an enzyme that breaks down the filler. This is one of the key safety advantages of HA-based products.

We recommend waiting 24–48 hours before flying. Cabin pressure and altitude can affect swelling and tissue response.

Your doctor will assess your face, discuss your goals, and recommend an appropriate volume and approach. We favour a conservative starting point — you can always return for more if needed.

Yes — this is a common combination. Your doctor will advise on the sequencing and timing of combined treatments.

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid filler. It may be used if a result is unsatisfactory, if filler has been placed incorrectly, if there is a vascular event, or simply if a patient wishes to remove their filler. It is an important safety tool that underscores why HA-based fillers are the preferred choice.

Yes, in most cases. Your doctor will assess what is already present, discuss the history, and determine the appropriate approach. Unknown or recently placed filler from elsewhere may require a period of assessment before adding more.
